Semi-Western is a publication geared towards the tactical side of tennis, with match analysis, commentary on trends, player profiles, tournament recaps, and much more.
I try to combine visual aids (videos and gifs) and accessible language (not too much technical jargon, I hope) to help fellow hobbyists appreciate how amazing professional tennis players are.
Why subscribe?
You can expect a new post once a week (maybe more during Slams / other major tournaments) on a variety of topics. I may be covering specific players, specific matches, topical tournament goings-on, but also evergreen content like explainers on how to watch tennis, broader tactical themes, and a little bit of data analysis mixed in.
My goal is to try and recreate the vibe (if not necessarily the writing talent) of Grantland era Zach Lowe and Bill Barnwell, with a bit of Pitching Ninja, but for tennis. I want you to leave every post feeling more informed, and a little smarter about how to watch tennis.
About the author
I’m a Bay Area-based techie with a lifelong passion for tennis. I’ve played since I was 10 and never made it beyond “middling junior”. My own lack of physical talent has meant that I often spend a lot of time thinking about how to beat my opponents, which led me to starting Semi-Western. The publication’s name is a reference to the commonly used grip for hitting forehands, and my own upbringing (born in China, raised in Canada).
Some more information about my tennis bona fides (for you to judge whether my opinions can be trusted)
Current Level: USTA 4.0 / UTR 6.5
Technique quick-fire: Right-handed, 2-hander, platform serve
Style of play: Counterpuncher most times, All-court when I’m up two breaks
Pro player comp: Andy Murray, sometimes Casper Ruud
Aspirational pro comp: Karolína Muchová
Favorite shot: Inside-in forehand
Favorite player(s) growing up: Federer, Agassi, Nalbandian, Safin
Favorite current player(s): Tommy Paul, Muchová
Player(s) that I’ve come to appreciate now that I’m older: Hewitt, Murray, Hingis, Clijsters, Nishikori
Player(s) that I still have stock in despite my better judgement: Korda
Hottest tennis take (that I actually kinda stand by): Slams should be Best of 3 up until the Round of 16 for men’s and women’s singles, then Best of 5 from Quarterfinals onwards
